ALR means ambient-light rejecting. CLR is commonly used to emphasize ceiling-light rejection. In UST shopping, the labels overlap, so the surface design matters more than the acronym.
What UST ALR/CLR screens are trying to do
An ultra-short-throw projector sends light upward from below the screen. A lenticular UST screen can use angled optical structures that reflect the projector's light toward viewers while absorbing or redirecting light arriving from above. Fresnel screens use a different optical pattern to accept projector light from a narrower geometry and reject room light from other directions.
Why a generic ALR screen can be wrong for UST
Many ALR screens for standard projectors are designed for light arriving from the front or above, not from the steep angle of a UST projector. The wrong optical orientation can darken or unevenly reflect the projector's image.
How to shop the terms
- Confirm the screen explicitly supports ultra-short-throw projection.
- Check where ambient light comes from, not only how much light is in the room.
- Compare viewing angle and gain alongside the ALR/CLR claim.
