Lenticular and Fresnel UST screens both reject room light, but they do it with different optical structures. The tradeoff is usually between viewing-zone flexibility and directional brightness/light rejection.
Lenticular UST screens
A lenticular screen uses fine horizontal optical structures. In a UST design, the surface is oriented to reflect projector light coming from below toward the audience while absorbing much of the light arriving from above. This architecture can support wide horizontal viewing angles. The Black Series publishes a 170° viewing angle.
Fresnel UST screens
A Fresnel screen uses concentric optical structures that can concentrate the useful light into a more defined viewing zone. Many Fresnel products publish higher gain than lenticular alternatives and can perform strongly under ambient light, but the viewing cone can be narrower.
Which one fits your room?
- Wide seating: favor a wide published viewing angle and check off-axis performance.
- Heavy ambient light: compare directional light rejection and gain, not just ALR percentage.
- Projector brightness: lower-gain surfaces can need more projector output at 150 inches.
- Seam sensitivity: some newer large Fresnel screens advertise seamless 150-inch construction; verify the exact model.
